The project extends nearly three miles of U.S. 36 between Raceway Road to the southbound ramp of I-465 in Marion County. Utility work is expected to begin in early 2025. Construction is expected to begin in late 2025. A second construction period would begin in 2026. The anticipated project completion is 2027.

The project need is based on the greater-than-expected crash history, forecasted congestion and delay, deteriorating condition at the Shiloh Creek culvert, and lack of complete-and-ADA-compliant pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Adding travel lanes performs the best for improving safety and reducing congestion.  Adding travel lanes is expected to reduce crashes by 38.1%.

Taking of right-of-way was minimized where possible. Impacted driveways would be reconstructed. An existing paved-shoulder and open-ditch drainage system would be upgraded to a better-performing and aesthetically pleasing curb-and-gutter systems with inlets to keep stormwater from pooling.

There will be continued access for properties and services, including 5 IndyGo bus routes and first responders in the lane that is converted from shoulder to travel lane.

As proposed, the preferred alternative involves new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant pedestrian sidewalks/multi-use path and drainage improvements.

At the signalized intersections.

There will be two lanes open at all times in each direction. Drivers can expect traffic patterns to change along with lane shifts and some roads may be temporarily unavailable.

Improved traffic while reducing the need for neighborhoods to be U.S. 36 motorists “shortcuts.”
