New traffic pattern to impact U.S. 36 for Modern Rockville Road project

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces a new traffic pattern that will impact U.S. 36 in Indianapolis as part of the ongoing Modern Rockville Road project.

Beginning on or after Friday evening, March 20, crews will close the eastbound lanes between Raceway Road and Girls School Road. This will allow them to implement a traffic pattern shift to the north as construction to convert the eastbound shoulder into a third travel lane continues.

More lane closures and traffic pattern shifts are anticipated through the remainder of construction season. In addition, crews will continue utility relocations between Transfer Drive and I-465 throughout the remainder of the season.

All work is weather-dependent and subject to change. INDOT encourages drivers to continue using caution in and around work zones.

Intermittent lane closures to impact Rockville Road (U.S. 36) between Indianapolis and Avon

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 24, 2025) – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces the start of intermittent single-lane closures on Rockville Road (U.S. 36) west of I-465, with the majority of work happening between Raceway Road and Girls School Road.

The lane closures, which are in both eastbound and westbound directions, ensure the safety of crews who will be relocating utilities ahead of construction as part of the Modern Rockville Road improvement project.

Modern Rockville Road will bring added capacity to roads, bridges and storm drains. Work in this phase of the project is expected to last through December 2025 but is weather-dependent and subject to change. Major roadwork in the three-mile corridor is planned for the 2026 and 2027 construction seasons. INDOT encourages drivers to use caution while traveling in and around all work zones.

Modern Rockville Road is focused on addressing traffic congestion due to U.S. 36 currently having just four travel lanes, crash conflict points with left-turning vehicles, poor drainage in shoulders, and lack of sidewalks for pedestrians.
